A1

A1 β€” Beginner

60–100 hours of study

You can understand and use very basic expressions to satisfy concrete needs.

At this level you can:

  • Introduce yourself and others
  • Ask and answer basic personal questions (name, age, address)
  • Interact simply when the other person speaks slowly and clearly
  • Understand familiar words and simple phrases
  • Fill in a simple form with personal details
A2

A2 β€” Elementary

100–200 hours of study

You can communicate in simple and routine tasks on familiar topics.

At this level you can:

  • Describe your background, immediate environment, and matters of need
  • Handle short social exchanges (shopping, transportation, simple services)
  • Understand sentences related to areas of immediate relevance
  • Write short, simple messages and notes
  • Talk about past events and future plans in simple terms
B1

B1 β€” Intermediate

200–350 hours of study

You can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling.

At this level you can:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters
  • Travel without difficulty in areas where the language is spoken
  • Produce simple connected text on familiar or personally interesting topics
  • Describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions
  • Give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
B2

B2 β€” Upper-Intermediate

350–500 hours of study

You can understand complex text and interact with native speakers fluently.

At this level you can:

  • Understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics
  • Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers
  • Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects
  • Explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving advantages and disadvantages
  • Write clear, detailed text on various topics in your field of interest
C1

C1 β€” Advanced

500–700 hours of study

You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously for social, academic, and professional purposes.

At this level you can:

  • Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts including implicit meaning
  • Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching
  • Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes
  • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects
  • Follow extended speech even on abstract topics without difficulty

C2 β€” Mastery

700–1,000+ hours of study

You can understand virtually everything heard or read with near-native proficiency.

At this level you can:

  • Understand virtually everything heard or read with ease
  • Summarise information from different spoken and written sources
  • Express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely
  • Differentiate finer shades of meaning in complex situations
